Ferruccio Busoni even considered the piano concerto a “Symphonie italienne”. When listening, however, one can hardly escape a deep "German" mood through the Bach-Beethoven-Brahms guide. It is therefore not surprising that this music is now felt to be deeply 'European', although Busoni chose to end the concerto with a hymn to Allah and to challenge our cultural clichés.
