Fabio Montomoli completed his studies at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome under Prof. Carlo Carfagna. He attended masterclasses at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and studied classical guitar with Eliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch-Diaz, as well as Baroque performance practice with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. He also studied counterpoint and composition with Maestro Francesco Iannitti Piromallo.
Montomoli won first prizes at seven of the most important national competitions in Italy and, in 1992, the international “Mauro Giuliani” Guitar Competition. He then launched a concert career that has taken him to major concert seasons across Europe, Asia, the United States, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania, with more than 1,000 performances as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, and with symphony orchestras.
His extensive orchestral repertoire includes Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Concerto No. 1 in D major, and the Guitar Concerto in A major by Francesco Iannitti Piromallo, which is dedicated to him.
As a guitarist, he is regularly invited to major international guitar festivals, including Andrés Segovia Ciudad de Linares (Spain), Dallas Guitar Festival (USA), Hersbruck Guitar Festival (Germany), Tokyo Guitar Festival (Japan), Volos Winter Guitar Festival (Greece), Turku Guitar Festival (Finland), and Morelia Guitar Festival (Mexico).
He collaborates continuously with several composers who have dedicated works to him. Maestro Fabrizio Festa composed for him the suite Paesaggi for solo guitar (1997). Francesco Iannitti Piromallo dedicated to him the Concerto in A major for guitar and orchestra (2002), the Sonata in D major for solo guitar (2007), the suite La
Porta del Sole for clarinet and guitar (2009), and Three Album Leaves (2013).
He records for the label SAM Classic, which has released ten CDs to date (Audioglobe Distribution), including world-premiere recordings and transcriptions of major instrumental works (La oración del torero op. 34, Cinco danzas gitanasop. 55 by Joaquín Turina). His most recent CD, Mediterranea, featuring music by Francesco Iannitti, was released recently.
