Luca Quintavalle Harpsichordist and Conductor
Luca Quintavalle has been described by Le Monde as a “revelation”, and by Süddeutsche Zeitung as “an outstanding soloist”.
As a soloist and continuo-player, Luca Quintavalle has collaborated with orchestras such as Europa Galante, Concerto Köln, Les Talens Lyriques, Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Cappella Gabetta, Ensemble Matheus, Il Pomo d'Oro, Mozarteumorchester, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt.
He has performed throughout Europe and in Israel, the USA, Japan and Russia. For more than five years, he was the harpsichordist for Cecilia Bartoli and Les Musiciens du Prince, and since 2020, he has regularly collaborated as assistant and continuo-player with Fabio Biondi. His debut as a conductor for the opera production "L'amazzone Corsara" from Carlo Pallavicino at the Innsbrucker Festwochen 2022 was critically lauded. In September 2023, he conducted the Orchestra and Choir of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma in four symphony concerts. He has recorded for the labels Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Grammophon, Capriccio, Onyx, Hyperion, Hänssler Classics, Pan Classics, Erato, and TYXart.
His solo recording debut for the label Brilliant Classics with harpsichord music by Barrière and De Bury was praised by the critics (American Record Guide: “I don't expect this recording to be surpassed”; “Recording of the Month” Music web international; “a great deal of excellent playing....unreservedly recommended” Early Music-Oxford Press; “This is the most impressive harpsichord CD I've heard in years” klassik.com). His second solo recording of Anton Eberl's sonatas for fortepiano got 5 stars Reviews by Classic Voice and Piano News and “Joker Crescendo Découverte” by Crescendo Magazine.
His first CD as a conductor “Mirrors” with Jeanine de Bique and Concerto Köln for the label Berlin Classics was considered as one of the discographic revelations of the year (Diapason D'or Découverte, 5 Stars from Forum- Opera, The Times, BBC Music Magazine and MUSICA, Gramophone Editor's Choice, OPERA MAGAZINE - CD of the month), and won the OPUS KLASSIK. Quintavalle is also very active in promoting 20th and 21st century music and his CDs were lauded by Le Monde, il Corriere della Sera, il Giornale della musica, BBC Music Magazine, Classic Voice among others, and also received a nomination for the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”. Quintavalle currently lectures at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf.
He studied piano with Ernesto Esposito and harpsichord with Giovanni Togni in Como. As a DAAD stipend-holder, he completed his studies with Christian Rieger at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen with “Konzert-Examen”. In 2007 he won the G. Gambi basso continuo competition in Pesaro.
